THE ROCKPINS
Type in 'bands near me' into google and you will no doubt be overwhelmed with the amount of sponsored adverts, agencies and bands that pop up, all vying for your business! Too much choice? Probably! The problem with choosing a live band is there are so many hobbyists out there with an internet presence, because people like being in a band no matter what level they are, and they want to be out gigging. This causes problems for the professionals because the hobbyists charge too little, play too loud, have very poor sound equipment which puts potential clients off booking a live band, and instead they go for the easy option of hiring a DJ. (Arghhh!!!) We have seen this time and time again when at wedding shows. 90% of potential clients who want to have some evening entertainment walk straight up to the guy with a disco ball and the ability to press play on an MP3 and have over serious money. So if you do want live music (thank you!) how do you go about finding a decent one once you've got your online results from your search of 'bands near me'?
To book a live band is easy. To book a good one is not quite as straight forward. There are so many live music agencies out there with hundreds of bands on their books. But from our experience, very few of these agencies have ever met or seen the bands they represent, so really they have no more information on their ability / sound than you do. They are relying on their online presence. But there are a few that will audition the bands before adding to their books, but they are rare!
There are also a number of bands who don't use agencies (such as The RockPins). But finding them is harder as they don't have the budget / resources to be placed on page 1 of Google. More likely page 4 or 5, and who goes there? Best thing to do, is spend a good few hours searching out a few, looking at their videos, trying to find good live videos that aren't overproduced. Because anyone / any band can sound good if they spend long enough in the studio. Then look at their reviews - are they real, are they any good?
See them play live. If you can, it is good to see the bands play live. This is obviously harder since the Covid situation arose as most pubs are still not having much live music.
